Don’t feel sorry about asking this; it’s honestly such a valid question and something a lot of people struggle with.
I think the best way to handle these feelings is to remove yourself, and by that I don’t necessarily mean give up k-pop. I mean take breaks from it every now and then. The k-pop industry is pretty damn problematic tbh, so if you ever feel like it’s too much to handle, that’s okay. It’ll always be there when you wanna dive back into it.
Remind yourself that their beauty standards are always going to be out of your reach just for the simple fact that your beauty is different. Because colorism is so deeply connected with racism, these standards are incredibly Eurocentric. Most Asian people don’t even fit these standards. So, yeah the “he’s too dark” jokes suck and have major anti-black undertones, but you have to be able to remove yourself from feeling like it’s directed towards you. Colorism is a big issue for all people of color, and it’s something that the Asian community (idk a better way to put it, i’m sorry) kinda just has to deal with on their own the same way black people have to deal with our brand of colorism on our own. So, when it happens, acknowledge it and hold the offender accountable for it, but acknowledge that it comes from a deeper place of self-hatred, as well. Never let it slide, but never let it overwhelm you. Does that make sense? I hope that makes sense.
Personally, my goal has never been to
equilibrate my love for k-pop and my love for myself. My goal has always been to love myself more. I think that’s where a lot of black k-pop fans have trouble coping with the negative parts of the industry. When you are aware of anti-blackness being a part of something you love, you need to love yourself more and mentally prepare yourself for whatever issues that come up by becoming more secure in your own identity. K-pop is one of my interests, but my melanin, culture, and people are always going to be a bigger part of who I am. For example, I may have one specific artist that I really like but they keep saying and doing offensive things even after they’ve been corrected. My thought process is, “Okay, I really liked them, but this makes me too uncomfortable to actually enjoy their art, so I think I need to move on for the sake of my own happiness and mental health.”
I’m sorry this is so long. Hopefully something I said helped a little. But yeah, in conclusion: it all comes down to validating yourself rather than seeking that validation elsewhere (in the k-pop industry). They have their own set of beauty standards but your type of beauty just happens to exist outside of that. Learn to embrace that.
